Course Outline

Delivering consistent compassionate and effective care at the frontline of maternity health services requires mental and emotional resilience.

Resilience as a way of being includes a sense of recovery and rebounding despite adversity or change. It entails being able to stay connected and empathetic with other people and own self without it resulting in compassion fatigue or burnout. Resilience involves developing a mind-set that is flexible and can adjust in times of adversity, a mind-set which can maintain equilibrium under pressure while retaining awareness of the wider environment, and continue to move act and interact positively without blame or recriminations. In order to be resilient we have to take personal responsibility for our experience; no one can do it for us.

Resilient people are able to deal with uncertainty, react positively to ambiguity and stay connected to people’s humanity.

Aims of the Course

Develop the qualities, attitudes, beliefs and perspectives to adapt, persevere and “bounce-back” despite challenges and hardships. (Mental strength)

  • Learn to recognise the unproductive rules (messages) that detract from resilience
  • Raise their awareness of the positive human factors that support and increase resilience
  • Expand their ability to perform at peak potential even in complex and stressful environments
  • Understand resilience from both a personal and team/group perspective
  • Review their own level of resilience and identify areas to work on in the future
  • Integrate the learning with relevant key objectives of the NHS
Relevant For

The course is ideally taught in a multidisciplinary setting and is relevant to all members of the acute maternity team, including health-care assistants, midwives, obstetricians, theatre support staff and anaesthetists. It is also relevant for medico-legal practitioners.

The intent is that each and every participant leaves the programme with:

  • A new access to being resilient, a renewed sense of confidence to be resilient and how to apply this to patient safety and maternity care
  • A profound awareness and understanding of the difference being resilient can make to teams who work with women, their babies and their families

The following key domains will be covered:

  • The distinctions of resilience – mapping the territory, identifying the nature of resilience
  • Resilience mind-set and mental strength  – what it is and what it is not
  • Resilient teams – their qualities and characteristics, how they operate, how they communicate, how they empower each member and encourage individual resilience
  • Clinical Implications and relevance – How resilience applies to patient safety and maternity care
