Anatole Kaletsky

Anatole Kaletsky is Editor-at-Large of The Times of London, where he writes a twice-weekly column on economics, politics and international relations. He is also a partner in GaveKal Research, a Hong Kong-based consultancy which provides economic and financial analysis to 200 financial institutions and multinational companies around the world.

Mr Kaletsky was a full-time journalist for The Times, Financial Times and The Economist from 1976 until 1998, when he expanded his activities to include economic forecasting and financial consulting. In early 2002, he merged his personal consulting company with Gaveco, an investment strategy and asset allocation adviser, to create GaveKal Research. He is also a Director of several investment ocmpanies, including the JP Morgan Emerging Markets Investment Trust. In 1998 he was elected by Britain’s economics profession to a five-year term on the governing council of the Royal Economic Society. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, Britain’s principal advisory body on the public policy issues raised by medical and biotechnology advances.

Mr Kaletsky’s journalistic work has won numerous awards and distinctions. In 1996 he was named Newspaper Commentator of the Year in the BBC Press Awards and he has twice received the British Press Award for Specialist Writer of the Year, as well winning the Wincott Award for economic journalism administered by the Institute of Economic Affairs and the first Cernobbio-Europa prize for European Journalist of the Year.
Prior to his appointment to The Times, Mr Kaletsky worked for 12 years on the Financial Times in a variety of posts, including New York Bureau Chief, Washington Correspondent, International Economics Correspondent and Moscow Correspondent. He started his journalistic career on The Economist, where he wrote about business and finance from 1976 to 1979. He still contributes an annual article on the outlook for the British economy to The Economist’s best-selling yearbook, The World In 200x.

From 1990 to 1996 Mr Kaletsky was Economics Editor of The Times, responsible for all the paper’s economic news and analysis. Since relinquishing his executive role in order to create his consultancy business, Mr Kaletsky has remained the paper’s principal commentator on economics and international affairs.
Mr Kaletsky was educated at Cambridge University, where he graduated from King’s College with a first class honours degree in Mathematics and at Harvard University, where he was a Kennedy Scholar and gained a master’s degree in Economics.

Mr Kaletsky was born in 1952 in Moscow, Russia and also lived as a child in Poland and Australia. In addition to Engish he speaks fluent Russian, has a working knowledge of French and some Polish. Since 1966 he has lived in Britain and America. He is now based in London and is married with three children.
